The title of this post tickles me. If you have ever seen the movie “Bolt” you probably get it! This is a quote from a movie that we watched a lot when my kids were younger. The movie is about a dog that plays a super hero. Towards the end of the movie the pigeons are pitching their next movie idea to Bolt and one of them says “Aliens” and another pigeon says “Oh snap!”. So anytime anyone brings up the subject of aliens, my brain immediately goes “Aliens! Oh snap!”.
There has been some talk recently in the news and on social media about aliens, extra-terrestrials and/or life on other planets. I think this sparks a lot of curiosity! It’s cool and sometimes scary to think that there might be other life out there besides what we know about here on earth. And of course we have all seen the movies that portray this from “E.T.” (about a loveable alien) to “Signs” (about scary aliens that want to kill us).
Yes, it could be possible that other life exists on these other planets. Or maybe not. Some people speculate about spiritual explanations such as angels or demons, while others believe there may simply be natural explanations we don’t understand. Could it be that we are not supposed to have answers to these questions? Is it possible that all of that is just people’s imaginations running wild and it really is just us? Yes to all of the above (in my opinion).
But here’s the question I keep coming back to:
Does any of this really matter?
I always try to go back to Scripture. And the Bible never clearly tells us whether life exists on other planets.
To me, that says something important: it’s not something God intended to be our focus.
Some might say “of course it matters”. But does it really? My hope and faith is in my Heavenly Father. I trust Him. Nothing else matters to me.
If God wanted us to know about life on other planets He would have laid it out clearly in His Word.
I’m not saying that the Word doesn’t speak about other beings. It absolutely does (usually referring to angels, demons, Nephilim etc.). There is a lot of the Bible that we all still don’t understand. And unless you speak fluent Greek or Hebrew, and you fully understand the culture from the time periods of the Bible you won’t understand everything in scripture. And that is okay.
The most important thing is that we love God and we try to serve Him to the best of our ability. Obey His Word. Keep His commandments. If He wanted us to know about other life forms, He would have told us, especially if it were going to impact our lives.
God looks on our hearts and He knows us. He created us and He created the universe! There is nothing out there in the great beyond that surprises Him!
Rather than worry about aliens, UFO’S, etc, we should be the most concerned about our relationship with the creator! If there is something we truly need to understand, God is fully capable of making it clear in His timing.
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:36-40)
“that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. 5 For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.” (Colossians 2:2-5)
I pray that as more and more things like this come up, we remember what is most important and we cling closely to our Savior!
Blessings,
~ Cheryl
