Things I Like on Amazon

Today is Black Friday. I don’t know how we got to this point, but in America we have actually made an extra holiday out of shopping and fighting over sales and those hard to get deals for Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good sale and a good deal. Who doesn’t?  I’ve been “black Friday shopping” before, and I’m not condemning anyone who does it.  I am just wondering what America has turned Christmas into that we (some of us) are willing to fight the crowds to get the “perfect Christmas gift” or the best deal.

Even after Black Friday, the whole month of December will be filled with gatherings and shopping and gift exchanging.  It’s a busy time of year.  All in the name of Christmas! We stress over what to buy our kids and spouses for Christmas. We stress over fitting in all of our family gatherings and making everyone happy! We stress over having the money to buy everything that we want to buy. We stress over all of the dates on our calendar. By the time Christmas gets here, it’s a wonder we haven’t had a nervous breakdown!  We’ve stressed all month until we can’t really enjoy the day and what it is really all about.

I wonder what Jesus thinks about all of this?  I wonder if He looks down at us doing all of this running around and just shakes His head.  I can just imagine Him saying “Really? You had to fight that person to get that toy to give to your child that already has too many toys? And you are doing this for Christmas?”

We have forgotten what Christmas is all about.  We don’t need to go broke trying to get our children the biggest and best gifts.  God sent all of us the best, most special Gift we will ever receive over 2,000 years ago! The absolute best thing you can do for anyone for Christmas (especially your children) is to make sure they know about this special Gift!  How God sent his son to be born in the lowliest, most humble place.  He was a gift to all of us!  He came into this world just so that He could take our place on the old rugged cross.

Please don’t spend this whole month preparing for Christmas and totally miss the point. Don’t get so wrapped up in the presents that we miss out on His presence!  This Christmas season let’s take the time each and every day to spend some time with Jesus. After all it is His birthday! All He wants for His birthday is you.

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:8-14

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:16-18
